                                              WrestleMania 26 - Bret Hart's Return

Bret Hart was returning. What else do you need?

                                              Bret's Return (Written 12/18/09)

Bret makes his big return, gives a little speech, and is about to leave the ring, until "BREAK IT DOWN"! Bret is cautious as Shawn walks to and enters the ring. Shawn tells him that what happened in Montreal was a long time ago, and that he's a different person now. Shawn apologizes and offers his hand to Bret; Bret thinks for a few moments, then shakes it. They hold the hand-shake for a few moments, allowing plenty of time for the moment to sink in (and for cameras to capture it).

The two are about to leave the ring, when Jack Swagger interrupts; he's carrying a mic, and interrupts his own music as he's walking to the ring. He sarcastically says that "Nobody cares about you two dinosaurs, they want to see young, exciting stars, like the 'All-American American'." Swagger continues to brag, saying that he'd love to beat the two of them up, but wouldn't want to break their hips or anything. After a while, Shawn and Bret decide they've had enough, and toss Swagger out of the ring together. Shawn then raises Bret's hand in victory, and leaves the ring, as Bret's music plays and we fade to black.

Later that night, Shawn demands a match against Swagger. Some excuse is made for Trips not being in the building that night, and the match ends with Miz interfering on Swagger's behalf. Bret makes his way out to confront them, and Swagger-Miz get in Bret's face, threatening to attack them, but Shawn makes the save with a chair. Shawn hands Bret a chair to defend himself with, and Shawn beats on the heels until they retreat.

This then easily leads to "DX" and "Hart Dynasty" becoming unlikely allies against Swagger-Miz and some other partners of their choosing. Vince would lead the heel group out of disgust that Trips and Shawn - who have recently been seen as allies of Vince – siding with Bret.

                                              Shawn-Trips-Tyson-Smith/Jericho-Swagger-Miz-Show?
                                              Bret-Shawn-Trips-Tyson-Smith/Vince-Jericho-Swagger-Miz-Show?

I think having Bret and Shawn bury the hatchet (even if it's just a storyline) would do far more to give closure to whole situation than some lame "revenge" storyline, portraying neither Bret or Shawn as being able to “get over it”; otherwise, you’re left with one or both of them looking pathetic due to still allowing those feelings to eat them alive.

                                              Bret/Vince at "WrestleMania 26" (Written 3/7/10)

I think an argument can be made for putting Vince/Bret on last. The match most likely will not be a five-star affair, that’s a given. But is there a match on the card with more history than this? No. Is there another main-event on the card where the outcome is guaranteed to “send the fans home happy”? Is there another match that they could just overbook to Hell and still make it fun?

The main reason I think it should go on last, however, is that they could have a WONDERFUL close to the show if all of the faces came out at the end to lift Bret onto their shoulders. Imagine this: Vince enlists Batista, Jericho, and McIntyre to help him during the match, only for Cena, Edge, and Shawn to run interference; after the faces clear the heels out of the ring, Bret puts Vince in the “Sharpshooter”, and Vince submits. Shawn jumps into the ring to hug Bret, followed by Cena and Edge lifting Bret onto their shoulders; from there, all of the babyfaces empty out of the dressing room, and celebrate with Bret in the ring as the show fades to black.

                                              Now THAT’S a feel-good moment.

And just imagine if Shawn loses and retires earlier in the night, that would make the moment doubly heartfelt – it would show that Bret has been such an influence on everybody in the locker room that even Shawn Michaels himself is willing to allow his own “moment” (retirement) be overshadowed by Bret. That’d be beautiful.
